Aieta WHERE THE TIME IT 'STOPPED

Aieta, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages, is a charming hill town which is only 10 km from the sea (520 m asl), and currently has about 800 inhabitants. It reaches from Praia a Mare along a very scenic road where you can catch the whole view of the Gulf of Policastro.
A world that has remained miraculously out of the upheavals of modernity. To those not familiar with the Calabria can reserve large and pleasant surprises. Beyond the most well-known and not always flattering stereotypes that concern, this region is undoubtedly a number of natural beauties and contrasts not common in other parts of Italy: beautiful beaches, rocky coastlines, beaches and blue of the Mediterranean, behind which stand, majestic mountains that preclude the interior landscape.

It is just behind these "worlds" that is Aieta, whose territory looks like a beautiful panoramic terrace between the Gulf of Policastro and the foothills of the Calabro, which, farther inland, with the Monte Pollino, exceeds 2000 meters. From the numerous archaeological traces, it appears that this area was inhabited since prehistoric times and later colonized by people of greek origin-Minoan (the name of Aieta in fact draws its origin from its greek "aetos" = eagle, a bird that nests on the rock) .

The present town dates back to medieval times. Around the year one thousand, in fact because of the raids of the Saracen pirates, many inhabitants of Blanda (greek-Roman town situated on a hill between the current Tortora and Praia a Mare) were forced to take refuge in a place more defensible thus giving origin to the country Tortora (bordering Aieta) and wards Julitta (from Blanda Julia) and Cantogrande of the Aieta.

Le Due Lanterne AIETA
Almost simultaneously, the inhabitants of ancient Ajeta Vetera had to leave the Monte Calimaro (896 mt) due to natural hazards, moving in the current village.
From the time of the Norman domination in Calabria, when ladies of Aieta Ruggiero was Scullando until the eighteenth century. The history of Aieta is studded with passages of lords: the Lauria, the Martirano, the Cosentino etc ... In the face of the arrogance of the feudal lords citizens of Aieta did record moments of reaction.

In 1563, in fact, under the leadership of Silvio Curatolo, the citizens of Aieta tried to redeem himself from the servitude baronial but the attempt failed and Curatolo, to avoid the reprisals of Baron Thomas Martirano was forced to take refuge in a farm owned by him and he took the name of the whole district.
The monuments that history has bequeathed to Aieta are mainly related to the late medieval period and the next as soon as the church of St. Mary of the Visitation of the sixteenth century and remodeled several times, now presents three naves and is equipped with numerous frescoes and paintings on wood of particular artistic importance (school of Giotto), newly restored pipe organ, or as the palace of the sixteenth century. described as "majestic rare example of Renaissance in Southern Italy" with facade, designed by architects of Tuscany.

Delicious is the gallery that opens on the same side of the building, where you can enjoy a nice view over the Gulf of Policastro.
