Sassari [sàs-sa-ri] (in Sassari Sàssari, in Sardinian Tàtari or Tàthari, in Catalan Sàsser, in ancient Spanish Saçer) is an Italian city of over 130,000 inhabitants (historical figure reached in April 2008-Istat source), capital of the homonymous province of north-western Sardinia and the main historical center of the Cape above the island.
Sassari stands on a limestone plateau slightly sloping north-west towards the Gulf of Asinara and the plain of the Nurra, while to the south-east the terrain is mainly hilly and the city is surrounded by numerous valleys, renowned for their fertility where they were cultivated vegetable gardens. In more recent times (nineteenth century) there was a great development of olive cultivation, and by now olive groves characterize the surroundings of the city. The urban center constitutes the nucleus of the prospected homonymous regional metropolitan area of over 225 000 inhabitants and of an urban area with the crown centers of the city of about 275 000 inhabitants. It is home to the University of Sassari and archiepiscopal seat (Archdiocese of Sassari).
